The Child in Time, 9.00pm, BBC1

Benedict Cumberbatch is at his brilliant best in this gripping TV adaptation of Ian McEwan’s 1987 novel. The Sherlock star plays a dad, Stephen, whose life is thrown into a pit of sadness when his young daughter disappears. As he devotes every hour to trying to find her, his marriage crumbles and he’s haunted by memories. But life goes on, however brutal the circumstances, and when Stephen’s best friend suddenly announces he’s quitting his job to retreat to the countryside, a shocking secret is uncovered that leaves everyone reeling. This could be the drama to finally win Benedict a BAFTA after seven nominations. Rating: *****

Antiques Roadshow, 8.00pm, BBC1

The series returns, celebrating 40 years on the air. Starting things off at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, Fiona Bruce and the team hear more priceless stories of family history, treasures found in charity shops, lofts and car-boot sales. There are some fabulous objects including a letter from Charles Darwin, a sketch possibly by Renoir, and a trip down memory lane for expert Ronnie Archer Morgan. We also look back at some of the highlights of the past four decades with David Battie, who has been with the show since the beginning. And Fiona has a catch-up with the original presenter, Bruce Parker, with some great old footage of the early shows. Rating: ****

Invictus Games, 5.35pm, BBC1

It’s three years since Prince Harry launched his inspirational contest for forces personnel from across the world who have suffered physical or psychological injuries, and the Invictus Games is now a fixture in the sporting calendar. This time, Toronto is playing host and Ade Adepitan and Daraine Mulvihill are on hand to present highlights from the lavish opening ceremony featuring performances from Laura Wright, Alessia Cara and Sarah McLachlan. Meanwhile, the battle for those all-important medals begins when the track and field athletics events get under way. Continues daily. Rating: ****
