Richard E Grant to turn back the clock with Ealing Comedies series
Richard E. Grant will be going behind the scenes to tell the story of one of Britain’s most celebrated film studios in a new three-part documentary series for Gold.
Richard E. Grant on Ealing Comedies will see the Downton Abbey star exploring the history of the famous studio while sharing a wealth of never-before-seen footage and stills from one of British cinemas most iconic brands – Ealing Comedies.
Telling the story of the studio during it’s heyday, Richard will also investigate the impact modestly-budgeted movies, such as Passport to Pimlico and The Ladykillers, have had on British humour.
He will be joined by a host of famous faces and comedy heroes, such as Mike Myers, Michael Palin, Stephen Fry and Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, who all have fond memories of the brand.
"Between 1939 and 1955, comedy gold was mined at Ealing with the 40-carat talents of Alec Guinness, Stanley Holloway and the inimitable Joan Greenwood, to name but a few,” said Richard.
“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to present these documentaries. Ealing for me was the studio that put Britain on the cinematic map and it’s been great to have the chance to watch all the films again and chat to both my friends and the people who share my love of Ealing Comedy.”
To celebrate the new series Gold will also screen a season of classic films including Passport to Pimlico, Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Lavender Hill Mob.
