Sean Bean wins nomination for transvestite role

Hardman actor Sean Bean has won himself a nomination at this year's Royal Television Society Awards for his portrayal of a transvestite teacher in BBC One's Accused.

Sean, who made his name in the Napoleonic war drama Sharpe, won plaudits for his role in the Jimmy McGovern-penned show, where he donned a mini-skirt and blonde wig to play English teacher Simon and his alter-ego Tracie.

However he faces stiff competition from Line Of Duty actor Lennie James, and Oliver Lansley for his performance as DJ Kenny Everett in the biopic Best Possible Taste.

Accused, meanwhile, also scored well in the actress category, with both Anne-Marie Duff and Olivia Colman winning nominations for their roles in the drama.

Elsewhere Olympics spoof Twenty Twelve has fared well, picking up nominations for best comedy writer and best actress for Jessica Hynes' role as dim-witted PR Siobhan Sharpe.

Jo Brand - who will host the awards ceremony - is also nominated in the best comedy writing category for her NHS-set sitcom Getting On.

Meanwhile Call The Midwife, Line of Duty and Sherlock will compete against each other for the best drama series prize, while Ant and Dec face 10 O'Clock Live's Charlie Brooker and The Voice judge will.i.am in the race for best entertainment performance.

The prizes will be given out at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on March 19.
