Sex and the City star Willie Garson wishes he was more like his character in the show.

Fans of the classic US romantic comedy – about four female friends from New York – will know Willie as Stanford Blatch, the gay best friend of the show’s main protagonist, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker).

Talking to What’s on TV – to mark the arrival of all six seasons of the show on streaming service, NowTV – Willie said: “He had a sunny view of life. I wish I was more like him, I can be darker than Stanford. He's a survivor and I hope, as I get older, that I can be that kind of survivor, like he is.”

Just like the women on the show loved their designer heels, Stanford stood out for his flamboyant suits. And while Willie didn’t get to keep any of those, he revealed that he did generate a rather impressive wardrobe…

“Because of the popularity of the show, every designer on the planet wanted their clothing on us, so I often kept the ‘designer’,” he said. “So if ‘Stanford’ wore a particular suit, that designer would then give me a suit that ‘Willie’ would wear!”

Willie has fond memories of working on Sex and the City, particularly alongside SJP, whom he’s been friends with for around 30 years.

“My goal in every scene was to make Sarah Jessica laugh and get her out of the scene, that was my only goal, just to try and ruin her take,” he said. ‘Also, at the end of scenes she would love to reach out and pat my bald head. She wouldn’t have done that with just some actor they’d hired to play this part – she was doing it because it’s me. Luckily we’ve maintained our friendship to now.”

Sex and The City® Season 1-6 is available from Thursday 5th May with the NOW TV Entertainment Month Pass for just £6.99.
