The BBC announced today that filming has commenced on the two-part adaptation of Iain Banks’ novel Stonemouth. The writer’s penultimate novel before his sudden death from terminal cancer last year tells the story of young Stewart Gilmour (Demon’s Christian Cooke), who returns to his hometown of Stonemouth for the funeral of a friend.
This is Stewart’s first visit home since his ex-girlfriend’s criminal family ran him out of town. He’s got a small window of opportunity to discover how his friend died and what went wrong with girlfriend Ellie Murston (Glue’s Charlotte Spencer), before her father Don (Peter Mullan, Trainspotting) and violent brothers lose patience…
Mistresses’ star Sharon Small plays Ellie’s mum Connie, while Gary Lewis (Young James Herriot) is local businessman Mike MacAvett.
BBC Scotland’s Executive Producer Christopher Aird said: “I am so pleased some of the best acting talent in the country will be appearing in Stonemouth. The scripts are really strong and we are very excited to be bringing Iain Banks’ novel to the screen in 2015.”
The scripts have been written by David Kane (The Field Of Blood, Prime Suspect) while Charles Martin (Run, Wallander) directs. Stonemouth is due on our screens next year, 19 years after Iain Banks’ The Crow Road was adapted as a four-part series for the BBC in back in 1996.
