Simon Cowell Haiti single debuts at number one
The single organised by Simon Cowell in aid of Haiti earthquake victims has debuted at number one in the UK charts. Everybody Hurts, a cover of the REM song, sold more than 453,000 copies in its first week on release, giving it the biggest first week sales of any charity track released this century. The track features X Factor stars Leona Lewis and JLS, as well as a string of other artists including Susan Boyle, Cheryl Cole and Robbie Williams. Proceeds from sales of the track will be split between the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and The Sun's Helping Haiti campaign. "The public have clearly taken the plight of the Haitian people to heart - this record is huge," said Martin Talbot of The Official Charts Company. "It's already the biggest seller of the year so far," added HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo, "and is now likely to go on to be the number one single of 2010." Elsewhere in the chart, the cast of Glee notched up their second top ten single with their versions of Halo and Walking On Sunshine entering the charts at number nine. Their version of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' is currently at number five. And X Factor twins Jedward tumbled out of the top ten after their debut single Under Pressure debuted at number two last week. The track, which features 90s rapper Vanilla Ice, fell to number 12.
