This year's Strictly Come Dancing contestants have reportedly been banned from using plastic bottles by the BBC in a bid to reduce plastic waste.
BBC bosses have reportedly banned this year's Strictly Come Dancing contestants from using plastic water bottles.
In the broadcaster’s latest efforts to go green, the BBC have banned celebrities from using bottled water in the Strictly Come Dancing studio, according to the Daily Express.
The Strictly contestants and dancers, along with the show’s crew, have been asked to bring in their own reusable water bottles instead.
The news follows reports from inews revealing an email to production staff, stating “we will no longer provide bottled water in the studio” by the end of the 2018 series.
“In light of Monday night’s (BBC1) documentary Drowning in Plastic, we feel this should be a priority for our production and would like to make the change over as soon as possible," it is reported to have said.
“Please can I kindly ask you all to bring your own reusable bottle."
In replacement of the single-use plastic water bottles, Elstree studios have put more water coolers in place.
Following the Government's ban on the sale of plastic microbeads, Strictly has promised this year’s series is going to be the “greenest” yet.
Along with the conscious effort to reduce single use plastic, all the liquid glitter used in Strictly Come Dancing’s theme weeks is reportedly sourced from Burt’s Bees which is biodegradable.
The make-up wipes used backstage are also biodegradable, and confetti used for special effects is also 50% biodegradable.
Strictly's efforts to go greener come after Sir David Attenborough’s The Blue Planet II shocked the nation last year with heartbreaking footage of wildlife struggling to survive as a result of plastic waste.
Following the series, Sir David himself called for public participation on reducing plastic waste, and back in June, the BBC announced the launch of Plastics Watch.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC1 on Saturday.
