The Simpsons renewed for 26th series

The Simpsons will return in 2014 for its 26th series, producers Fox have confirmed.

The news comes just days after the 25th series of the show - which is now the longest running animated series in US TV history - debuted on American screens.

Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly called it "one of the greatest sitcoms of all time".

"For more than a quarter of a century, The Simpsons has captured the hearts and minds of fans in a way that transcends ages, languages and cultures," Reilly said.

"I'm looking forward to yet another landmark season."

The latest series kicked off with Homeland spoof Homerland - while this weekend's Treehouse of Horror episode features a credits sequence directed by Pacific Rim's Guillermo del Toro.

The announcement of the 26th series comes in the wake of the news that a 'major character' will be killed off during the current run of episodes.

Executive producer Al Jean revealed earlier this week that someone would die during the series - but stopped short of saying who.

'I’ll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character,' he said, ‘but I won’t say who it is.'

Bookies have installed Abe 'Grampa' Simpson as the favourite for the chop, followed by the villainous Sideshow Bob.
