Disasters That Changed Britain, 9.00pm, History
Cold Feet’s James Nesbitt presents this series examining the most devastating disasters to befall Britain in the past 60 years, asking why warning signs were often ignored and looking at the changes that were made in their wake. From the Munich air crash of 1958, which devastated the Manchester United football team, right up to recent events, such as last year’s Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72, survivors recount their ordeals. Starting with the Ladbroke Grove rail crash of 1999, where the track operator was eventually fined for repeatedly ignoring a dodgy signal, this is frustrating, uncomfortable viewing. Rating: ****
Classic Mary Berry, 8.30pm, BBC1
Mary Berry has more delicious recipes and top tips up her sleeve this week, this time on the theme of ‘timeless entertaining’ – whether that’s a romantic meal for two or a big family gathering. She begins with her twist on a Scandinavian starter – beetroot gravadlax – made by covering a piece of salmon with fresh beetroot and leaving it to cure in the fridge for 24 hours. After a simple supper for two of Dover sole, Mary whips up some child-friendly sticky chicken, followed by slow-roasted duck with cherry sauce. Finally, before making a light-as-a-feather raspberry mousse, Mary helps top florist Simon Lycett decorate a banqueting table at Leeds Castle in Kent for the annual festival of flowers. Rating: ****
