NHS: To Provide All People, 8pm (times vary), BBC2
We all know the amazing things that the NHS does on a daily basis, but this moving ensemble drama, based on testimony from staff and patients, serves as a reminder of what it took for Aneurin Bevan to set up the Health Service back in 1948 and how it still provides vital care 70 years on. A stunning cast, including Michael Sheen, Eve Myles, Martin Freeman, Sian Phillips and Celia Imrie, play surgeons, nurses, porters, cleaners and patients, all speaking to camera as they recount their experience of working for or being treated by the NHS, what it means to them and what the future might hold for it. A thought-provoking watch. Rating: ****
Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars, 9pm (times vary), BBC2
He’s the guitar player who lived every note he played. But away from the sell-out shows, Eric Clapton’s life has been deeply troubled. This documentary tells Eric’s story in his own words and those of his friends and family. An intimate film covering rejection by his mother, major 1960s success with Cream, love, addiction and terrible loss, with a great soundtrack. Rating: ****
Hidden, 9pm, BBC4
This has never been a cheery watch, but tonight this dark thriller takes a very bleak turn. Student Megan wasn’t in a good place to begin with but after stepping out in front of Dylan’s truck, she wakes to find herself being locked in an outbuilding with a terrifying Dylan ominously telling her he wants to take care of her. Who Dylan is and why he’s so damaged is still unexplained but it’s obvious some very dark things have happened on that remote, ramshackle farm. There are also many questions about Dylan’s daughter, Nia. She doesn’t say much but she sees everything and is starting to wonder why her dad keeps women locked up in the cellar. Rating: ****
