Most of the people who search for their family members on this show are worried about whether or not their long-lost relatives will accept them, but 43-year-old Francesca has more reason than most. She was born as a boy, named Paul, until she realised 11 years ago that she was transgender and decided to begin the long transitioning process. So will her birth mother accept that the baby son she gave up all those years ago is now a daughter? Nicky and Davina also meet Maria, 53, whose Italian mother, Gilda, was forced to give her up for adoption in tragic circumstances when her fiancé was killed in a car crash. Although Gilda fled to England to have her baby, Maria’s mission to find her takes her on a soul-searching trip to Italy. Another weepy… Rating: *****
Knightfall, 9pm, History
After the death of Master Godfrey, Landry de Lauzon (Tom Cullen) steps up as the leader of the Knights Templar and soon finds himself welcoming a very important visitor to Paris. It’s always a treat to see former Downton Abbey favourite Jim Carter on screen, yet while Pope Boniface VIII has more than a hint of the stuffy Carson, he soon proves himself a subtle political operator. Excited by the discovery of the Holy Grail in France, Boniface urges Landry to keep his mission to find it a secret, yet the villainous William de Nogaret (Julian Ovenden) soon begins to wonder what the Templars are really up to… Rating: ****
Love Your Garden, 8pm (times vary), ITV
A warm welcome back to Alan Titchmarsh and his gardening gang, David Domoney, Frances Tophill and Katie Rushworth. Tonight the team get stuck into transforming inspirational fundraiser Betty Richards’ dangerous, drab, concrete back garden into something worthy of her. In 2017 Betty abseiled down the 170-metre Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth for charity. The thing is, Betty’s 90 and suffers from macular degeneration, a serious eye condition that she describes as being akin to looking through net curtains. Can Alan and his team create a safe, Italian-inspired sensory haven full of colours visible to Betty’s failing eyes? As heart-warming as the Summer sunshine… Rating: ****
