TV Times top picks for tonight
What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 6th February
Elizabeth: Our Queen: 9.00pm, C5
Now in the 65th year of her reign, the Queen is as popular and enigmatic as ever. This new eight-part series uses archive footage and rare interviews to delve into the private life behind the public face. Contributions from life-long friends Lady Prue Penn and Lady Myra Butter, and politicians such as Tony Blair, who worked closely with her, are particularly fascinating. Tonight’s opening episode focuses on formative moments in Elizabeth’s life, including her uncle King Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936, her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947 and the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952. The result is insightful, in-depth and surprisingly intimate. Rating: ****
Secret Life of 5 Year Olds: All Girls, 8.00pm, C4
One of our favourite documentary series returns with this special episode to mark 100 years since women (over the age of 30, initially) got the vote. Expert psychologists Elizabeth Kilbey and Laverne Antrobus are watching from behind the scenes while nine young girls from different backgrounds take part in activities designed to reveal their attitudes and opinions towards fairness and inequality, as well as what it really means to be a girl in 21st-century Britain. Zaina loves princesses, dolls and dressing up while Miylah is into dinosaurs and Ninja Turtles – will the two hit it off? An interesting and timely take on the usual format, with some unexpected results… Rating: *****
Ben Fogle: Return to the Wild, 10.00pm, C5
Three years ago, Ben Fogle visited twins Bill and Bob Stone in their hidden-away Utah home. The septuagenarian pair loved their life in the hills, where they grew their own veg and prepared for the end of the world with a huge store of supplies that could last for five years if the worst was to happen. As Ben returns he’s surprised to discover that Bob has got married and left the isolated ranch while Bill, at 75, is living alone, farming the 10-acre plot with only his old war movies for company. Ben worries how he’s coping, but we get the sense that ‘Wild Bill’, as his friends call him, will be hiding away in the hills for years yet. Rating: ****
