Extreme Wives, times vary, BBC2
The final episode of the series sees Kate in Shillong, north eastern India. She is with the Khasi people, who have one of the very last matrilineal cultures left in the world. After the brutality and inequality witnessed in the first two episodes, Khasi culture feels like a utopia for females. A woman can be independent and educated, she is in charge of all property and the family’s finances, and the children take her name. It almost seems too good to be true but, of course, it’s not perfect. Kate discovers many Khasi women are single mothers, with men feeling they have no responsibility to care or pay for their children. A fascinating conclusion to one of the year’s best documentary series. Rating: *****
Australian Wilderness, 8.00pm, ITV (ex Wales, Scot, NI)
Ray Mears continues his exploration of Australia’s wild places in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. He’s on a mission to find the country’s largest bird of prey – the wedge-tailed eagle – big enough to pick up an emu and known for chasing kangaroos off cliffs. But to spot this majestic bird of prey, Ray must take to the skies with bush pilot Paul O’Brien, where they hope to catch a glimpse of eagles riding the thermal currents. Rating: ****
Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, 8.00pm, C4
The boys are back in town! Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty return to the end of Southend Pier for a fifth series of Friday night feasts. Simon Pegg joins them in the café, where he talks about filming in Morocco, which inspires Jamie to cook him a lamb tagine, as well as an indulgent Provençal bake – layered pancakes, bacon and cheese. If you happen to have a picnic table lying around and a weekend to spare, Jimmy shows us how to knock up a Korean barbecue, and Jimmy and Jamie go on the road to champion free-range duck farming in the UK. Rating: ****
