Jessica Raine Last Post

The danger and emotion step up another notch after the gripping period drama hit the ground running with last week’s shocking and moving opener. The military police are working alongside the SAS to track down insurgent leader Abdul-Kadir Hakim and troublesome American reporter Martha Franklin is in tow. Poor Major Markham is facing a dilemma, though. His wife Mary is in labour but as things start going awry both at the hospital and out in the desert, he is forced to choose between his family and his men. Meanwhile, naive newbie Honor becomes aware of the reality of life in Aden when she encounters a scorpion, but there’s fun in store when her wayward pal Alison introduces her to the glamour of the BP club. Louis Theroux: Dark States, 9.00pm, BBC2

Louis Theroux: Dark States

In Huntington, West Virginia, one in four adults is addicted to heroin or other opiates. The rate of fatal overdoses is 13 times higher than the US national average and one in 10 babies is born dependent on opiates. As he begins a new series, Louis Theroux visits the Appalachian city to find out the reason for these horrifying statistics, meeting addicts, their families and the emergency services struggling to keep up with the fallout. It’s pretty bleak, but even so there are glimmers of hope in this moving film, such as former user Mickey, one year sober and passionately trying to pull others out of terrible situations, and pregnant Alisha, who is determined to put her past behind her. Escape, 8.00pm, C4

Escape

Five new engineers are stranded in an episode that tests their expertise, strength and stamina. A simulated landslide has caused several vehicles to fall into a deep canyon, so whatever the team builds needs to be powerful enough to clamber up the slopes and across the mountains to safety. Keeping everyone chipper is survival expert and all-round hero Ant Middleton, who has his work cut out in this extreme environment. Rating: ****
