Babies: Their Wonderful World, 9pm, BBC2
When do babies become aware of gender, when do they develop their unique personalities – and do smartphones really affect their fine motor skills? These and other burning questions are put to the test in this three-part series, which carries out scientific experiments to work out what is really going on in babies’ brains. Presented by paediatrician Guddi Singh, the show uses state-of-the-art technology to help us see what shapes babies’ formative years and the effect parents have on their development. ‘We have some answers to long-standing controversies now, like how to best deal with tantrums, for example,’ explains Guddi. Fascinating stuff. Rating: ****
The Truth About the Menopause, 9pm (times vary), BBC1
Journalist and presenter Mariella Frostrup wants to sort fact from fiction when it comes to the menopause. Millions of women are suffering with hot flushes, anxiety, sleep loss and depression, but the only treatment at the moment is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and there have been some scary headlines about its possible link to cancer. Mariella, who is on HRT herself, talks to experts to learn the truth about the risks. She also looks into other ways to reduce symptoms, including exercise, supplements and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), with some surprising and positive results. An intelligent film about a subject that’s not talked about enough. Rating: ****
Warship: Life at Sea, 9pm, Channel 5
The destroyer HMS Duncan is the most advanced warship on the planet. This four-part series follows the huge vessel as it embarks on a seven-month mission to the Black Sea. With 280 crew on board (plus 45,000 toilet rolls and six tonnes of potatoes), it sets sail from Portsmouth, then journeys through the Mediterranean and on to its volatile destination. But this series is as much about the people as the mission, including everyone from Captain Eleanor Stack to the youngest crew member, Owen, who has never even been abroad before, unless you count taking a family holiday to Wales! Rating: ***
