As many of you will know, the film’s tagline, ‘It all ends here’, is a tad misleading. ‘It all ends after the next instalment of this two-part finale’ would be more accurate, though admittedly less catchy, given that the final Potter book has been split into two films – the first of which is released later this year.
Though the trailer shows tantalising snippets from both instalments, it’s not entirely clear at which point in the action the films will divide. It’s probably safe to assume, however, that the final battle will be in the final film – if I’m wrong, I’ll eat my sorting hat.
Between them, the two instalments will chart Harry, Ron and Hermione’s epic quest to find and destroy Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes (the objects that sustain Vodemort’s immortality) as well as Harry’s unravelling of the legend of the Deathly Hallows (the three magical objects thought to make whoever possesses them the Master of Death). And, judging by the trailer, we’re in for some visual treats along the way. There’s the dangerous and dizzying flight from the Dursleys’ house; the robbery of Gringotts Wizarding Bank and the liberation of its guard dragon; the terrifying encounter with Voldemort’s venomous serpent Nagini; and the erosion of the protective charms around Hogwarts.
Ultimately all good things come to an end and in this case the end will be THAT battle. It’s what Harry’s been heading towards his whole life and what audiences have been heading towards since the first Potter film way back in 2001 (when the three leads were knee high to a house elf).
Reassuringly, the trailer suggests that the climactic encounter will be every bit as explosive and moving on screen as it is in J.K. Rowling’s book. Let’s just hope that director David Yates does justice to Mrs Weasley’s singular moment of glory at the height of the battle (I’ll say no more for fear of being hit with a silencing charm)!
Voldemort is, perhaps, a little wide of the mark when he teasingly hisses “Harry Potter… the boy who lived, come to die” – with two films to come and the recent opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, the young wizard looks set to live on for some time yet.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is released on 19 November 2010. Part II will follow in 2011.
