Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight three of the best shows on telly tonight for Wednesday 13th September including the return of Taskmaster...
Taskmaster, 9.00pm, Dave
How best to describe this show, now in its fifth series on Dave? Well, the Taskmaster himself, Greg Davies, says that the comedians competing – Bob Mortimer, Mark Watson, Aisling Bea, Nish Kumar and Sally Phillips – can ‘revel in the glory of being brilliant at a completely pointless activity.’ We say: just roll with the increasingly odd tasks that they’re given. Otherwise, Sally covering Greg’s co-host Alex Horne with lettuce and putting chocolate cake in his socks, or Bob bundling him into a car boot and singing Have You Seen the Muffin Man? seems downright sinister. Go with the Taskmaster flow, and it’s snort-laughingly funny. Rating: ****
Inside the Pack, 8.00pm, Nat Geo Wild
This engaging documentary follows packs of animals around the world, examining how they hunt as teams, follow rules and learn to survive together. On the savanna of East Africa, a lion pride competes with a pack of hyenas for prey, while in the American Rockies, opportunistic wolves chase after and cannily separate an elk herd in deep snow. In the Kalahari Desert, meerkat pups follow up a morning of sunbathing with a lesson in scorpion hunting from their parents, while a colony of bats shares its feed with friends to pay off debts. An extraordinary glimpse of team work, loyalty and sacrifice in the animal kingdom. Rating: ****
Stella, 9.00pm, Sky 1
This sixth series is the final visit to the Welsh valleys, and as it begins it seems Stella (Ruth Jones) and family are on the verge of something life-changing. Even though Ben is off to university, Stella’s house is still bursting at the seams, and she’s got a young baby and her nursing job to keep her busy. Then husband Michael (Patrick Baladi) drops a bombshell – he wants Stella to join him on an all-expenses-paid six-month work trip to Dubai. Will she finally leave her beloved Pontyberry behind? And are her frequent dreams about her ex, Rob, really just part of the grieving process, or something more? Rating: ****
