Best TV shows on TV tonight

Citadel, Prime Video

With an eye-watering budget of $250million – making it the second-most expensive TV series ever (after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) - this spy drama is one of the most anticipated TV events of the year, and it’s one sci-fi fans won’t want to miss. Bodyguard’s Richard Madden plays Mason Kane, a secret agent tasked with saving the world from a villainous espionage network, but it’s his relationship with fellow spy and lover Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) that forms the heart of this action thriller. It’s ambitious stuff, made more impressive by some terrific action set-pieces and a cast that includes Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci.

Mark Lewis Jones (also to be seen in the S4C drama Y Sŵn, available on iPlayer) is the guest star in this week’s final episode of the comedy about a crime-scene cleaner. He plays Richard, the gruff undertaker Wicky (Greg Davies) encounters when he’s called to clean up a gruesome murder at a creepy cottage in rural Wales. But as Wicky and Richard bond over their difficult jobs, they’re unaware that there’s an obsessive serial killer (Roisin Conaty, who also starred with Greg in the comedy Man Down) on the loose. With no phone signal for miles, can they escape the killer’s attention?

'Allo 'Allo!: 40 Years of Laughter, 10 pm, Channel 5

Listen very carefully, we shall say this only wurnce… In fact, it’s actually been said many, many times, as the sitcom which first aired more than 40 years ago spawned a host of catchphrases that you’ll still hear today. Spoofing the serious  wartime drama Secret Army, ’Allo ’Allo! ended up running for nine series, often drawing up to 14 million viewers. This feature-length documentary looks back at some of the comedy’s most popular moments with former cast members including Vicki Michelle (Yvette Carte-Blanche) and Richard Gibson (Herr Flick).

As the 65th series—no, don’t adjust your specs, you read that right the first time—of the comedy news quiz continues, this week’s returning guest host is deadpan mutli-hyphenate Richard Ayoade. He’s always a great addition to the show, as is another regular, Phil Wang, who returns as a guest with team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton.

The Diplomat, Netflix

The Diplomat.

The always-excellent Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, the newly appointed US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, who was hoping to be sent to Afghanistan rather than London. But as threats of war bubble over across the world, Kate has to make do with the UK, where she defuses international crises, forges strategic alliances, and adjusts to her new life and career.

Making everything harder is Kate’s need to balance the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state with surviving her long-term marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). The political thriller also stars Brits David Gyasi and Rory Kinnear, while Celia Imrie makes a guest appearance.

Peter Pan & Wendy, Disney Plus

Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling at the helm of a ship

Some 70 years after the release of the animated version of JM Barrie’s tale about the boy who wouldn’t grow up, Peter Pan is the latest Disney property to receive a live-action reimagining. Alexander Molony (The Reluctant Landlord) steps into Peter’s legendary boots, while Ever Anderson (Black Widow) plays sparky Wendy, whom Peter takes on an enchanting trip to Neverland. Everyone’s faves are present and correct, from the endearing Lost Boys – and now Girls! – to feisty Tinker Bell, but all eyes are on Jude Law’s villainous pirate, Captain Hook…
