Pilgrimage: The Road to the Scottish Isles, 9pm, BBC Two
Seven celebrities are packing their rucksacks to follow in the footsteps of sixth-century Irish monk St Columba as the modern-day pilgrimage series returns. All have different beliefs and faiths, which leads to lively discussions as they embark on a 15-day hike to Scotland. Former Countdown host Nick Hewer is the first to arrive at the starting point in Donegal to meet fellow pilgrims including TV presenter Scarlett Moffatt and cricketing legend Monty Panesar. As the 1,600km walk begins, the group get to know one another, and it’s not long before emotions run high, tears are shed and one break-off group finds themselves lost!

As Susan continues her cruise from the Canaries towards Portugal and Spain, the Regal Princess’ next stop is Funchal, Madeira. There are beautiful gardens and breathtaking views at Monte, but to get there Susan needs to take a cable car up and a frankly quite terrifying ‘sledge’ back down. There are also culinary firsts for the comedian in this episode: pastel de nata, which she declares ‘the most delicious thing I’ve ever had in my entire life’, and later (in Vigo, Spain), octopus, which ‘…is not awful’. Portuguese custard tart: one – octopus: nil.

Grantchester, season 7, 9pm, ITV
It’s crunch time in the penultimate episode for estranged couple Geordie and Cathy Keating (Robson Green and Kacey Ainsworth, who have not set a foot wrong this series). Geordie had expected Cathy to have him back home by now, but they seem further apart than ever – until Cathy organises a protest at Swinnertons over pay. Geordie is called to the scene and Cathy provokes her husband into arresting her! In custody, Cathy and Geordie discuss their relationship, and Cathy reckons they should stop focusing on the past and create new memories. We are rooting for them to reunite!

Not Going Out, season 12, 9.30pm, BBC One
When Lucy accuses Lee of not making an effort to chat with other parents when picking up the children from school, Lee decides he needs to brush up on his small talk. After an awkward attempt at talking to a group of mums in the playground, he – even more awkwardly – strikes up a friendship with a lone dad. This is bad news for Lee, as the man turns out to be a boring, quite strange conspiracy theorist, but good news for us as he’s played by the wonderfully deadpan Joe Wilkinson.

If you like The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, you shouldn’t miss this new series starring Mare of Easttown’s Jean Smart as a Joan Rivers-style comedian, Deborah Vance. After the veteran stand-up finds her career on the slide when her Las Vegas residency comes under threat, her manager teams her with reluctant young comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) who’s just been cancelled after a tasteless tweet went viral. Originally on HBO Max in the US, it’s already been renewed for a second season and won three Emmys, including outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Jean Smart.
Best film to watch on TV tonight
Iron Man 3, 10.35pm, BBC One
Robert Downey Jr is back as wisecracking billionaire inventor Tony Stark, aka superhero Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also returns as Pepper Potts and Ben Kingsley plays The Mandarin, a terrorist mastermind responsible for a series of global bombings. Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall also spell trouble, but don’t worry about the plot – it’s Stark’s smart one-liners, delivered by Downey with a whip-cracking snap, that make the film a winner.
