The Crown Jewels, 7.30pm, BBC One

Clive Myrie delves into the fascinating history of the Crown Jewels in this film marking the Platinum Jubilee. The stories behind some of the huge gemstones, such as the Great Star of Africa and the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, shed light on Britain’s colonial past. And while the English lost many of their jewel-encrusted ceremonial objects when they were destroyed by Oliver Cromwell, there’s a fascinating tale about how the Scots managed to smuggle ‘The Honours’, as their Crown Jewels are called, out of a besieged castle via some seaweed! Clive also gamely tries his hand at a spot of crown-making, but won’t be giving up the day job any time soon…

The Boys, season 3, Prime Video

TV tonight The Boys are back!

The Boys are back! (Image credit: Prime Video)

The brilliantly subversive and satirical fantasy drama that goes where other superhero sagas fear to tread returns for a third series. The Vought corporation’s latest bid to mililtarise its superheroes sees CEO Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) pitching a new version of drug Compound V, which gives them superpowers, but it lasts for just 24 hours. Meanwhile, Butcher (Karl Urban) is spending time with his dead wife’s son, and Hughie (Jack Quaid), who’s insecure about girlfriend Starlight’s superhero ex, is about to learn a shocking truth. There are lots of new heroes to look forward to, including Captain America lookalike Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), plus the usual generous helpings of sex, gore and bad language.

The Other One, season 2, 9.30pm, BBC One

TV tonight Cathy and Cat are in for more surprises

There are shocks aplenty for those chalk-and-cheese siblings Cathy (Ellie White) and Cat (Lauren Socha) in the final part of this sitcom tonight. As the sisters lure brother Callum to a Northern soul revival to try to help him heal his rift with his mum, Angela, Cat and Cathy then get the results of their Valentine’s Day DNA tests, which leave them stunned. But, the following day, it seems their late dad Colin has even bigger surprises for them from beyond the grave… This has been a really fun series, with great characters, and we really hope there’s another one.

Would I Lie to You? 9pm, BBC One

TV tonight Bob features in previously unseen clips

Who knew that a celebrity fibbing competition would become so popular that it’s constantly repeated? That makes new shows even more welcome, and while this isn’t exactly a new episode, it does contain previously unseen clips from the most recent series. Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell are joined by guests including Holly Willoughby, Gyles Brandreth, Jim Broadbent – and, yes, Bob Mortimer.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Stranger Things, season 4 (part 1), Netflix

TV tonight Eleven gets her skates on in California

Season 4 is finally here! (Image credit: Netflix)

The much-loved series makes the shift from the nostalgic 1980s supernatural smash to full-blown horror as it returns for its much-anticipated fourth series (part one’s eight episodes are available from Friday, May 27; part two from July 1). Three years in the making, the penultimate chapter begins with a now powerless Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in California with the Byers clan, while her pals back home head to high school in Hawkins. The show’s creators have promised lots of answers, as we delve deeper into the parallel world of the Upside Down, and there’s also a terrifying new monster on the prowl, played by Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Pride, 10.25pm, BBC Two

TV tonight Dominic West and Imelda Staunton star

A proud cousin of British movies such as Brassed Off, The Full Monty and Billy Elliot, this tells of how a section of the gay community went to support another oppressed group, the striking miners, in the early 1980s. Inspired by real events, it mixes a multitude of strands and perspectives to deliver a surprisingly feel-good experience, helped by a formidable cast including Imelda Staunton (to be seen as the Queen in The Crown this November), Bill Nighy, Dominic West and Andrew Scott. It’s a movie with heart and optimism, one that will have you railing against the system as well as making you cheer the human spirit.
