Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, season 5, 9 pm (times vary, not Wales), BBC Two
As Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse fish on the Thames in beautiful Berkshire, hoping to net a perch, the conversation flows from what they would rather face – snake, spider or grizzly bear – to a musical guilty pleasure (As It Was by Harry Styles for Paul; Keep On Movin’ by 5ive is Bob’s surprise choice). They also meet up with fellow comedian Richard Herring to chat about his recent battle with testicular cancer. And while it’s a serious subject, Ted the dog helps keep it light by appearing for lunch in a tuxedo and bow tie. "It’s like having George Clooney round," says Paul about their scene-stealing canine co-star.

Professor T, season 2, 9 pm, ITV
Another complex case presents itself when a palliative-care doctor, her husband and their two children are all found dead in a grotesque tableau in their living room. The expert insight of Professor T (Ben Miller) proves invaluable as the police try to determine whether they were murdered by an unknown assailant – or if one of the family killed the other three before taking their own life. The case hits DS Donckers (Emma Naomi) hard, as she comes to terms with her father’s dementia, growing closer to DS Winters (Barney White) in the process….

Paris to Rome with Bettany Hughes, 9 pm, Channel 5
Bettany finds that difficult balance for a TV historian, being both enthusiastic and erudite, as she takes an 18th-century-style Grand Tour of Europe. She begins, as the title suggests, in the City of Love, gaining special access (a celeb travelogue must) to the Louvre to study the Venus de Milo, before designer Christian Louboutin gives her a lesson in Parisian style. Fitting in more cultural history in Annecy, Provence and the Côte d’Azur, and then concluding with a rosé toast, it’s very much a case of wish you were here.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight
Crossfire, BBC iPlayer
Keeley Hawes takes on dangerous masked gunmen in this intense three-part action thriller, which is so nail-biting that you may need a pillow to hide behind! She stars as mum Jo, who’s on a luxury Canary Islands holiday with her kids, husband Jason and their best friends when shots ring out by the resort’s pool, turning their world upside down. As ex-copper Jo bravely decides to take on the snipers, it transpires that she’s also hiding a terrible secret, which is set to tear the lives of her loved ones apart. The top cast also includes The A Word’s Lee Ingleby, The Bay’s Daniel Ryan and Line of Duty’s Anneika Rose, but don’t expect all their characters to survive…
Best film to watch on TV tonight
The Greatest Beer Run Ever, Apple TV Plus
Based on a bonkers true story, this heartfelt comedy caper follows John ‘Chickie’ Donohue (Zac Efron), who decides to smuggle beer to his old neighbourhood friends fighting in Vietnam to show them that the country is still behind them. But his well-meaning journey turns into the adventure of a lifetime when he’s confronted with the realities of frontline battle and discovers that getting out of a war zone is much harder than getting into one. This charming feel-good tale also stars Russell Crowe and Bill Murray.
