Unforgotten season 5

We are so excited to see this back. Yes, Happy Valley was amazing but in our opinion Unforgotten deserves equal praise. (Catch up on ITVX if you want to know what you’ve been missing.) Following the shocking events that left us reeling at the end of series four, DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) returns but with a new colleague, DCI Jess James, played brilliantly by Sinéad Keenan. When the remains of a body are discovered inside a chimney breast in London the duo are on the case. But Jess’s first day as boss couldn’t get off to a worse start when she receives the devastating news that rocks her entire world.

Conscience-stricken bent cop Lou (Leila Farzad) is now committed to taking down her long-term gangland ally Col, who is running into difficulties in his drug-smuggling and property development operations. Meanwhile, both are experiencing work-related problems at home with their spouses. And when Lou’s anonymous tip-off to Bradford police about a possible drug deal involving Col’s men backfires, a gang war looks unavoidable. The pace is seriously picking up in this impressive crime drama, with Andrew Buchan’s softly spoken Col starting to bare his teeth, as an unexpected turn of events threatens Lou’s precarious house of cards.

The Deceived, Netflix

Paul Mescal is having his time in the spotlight — he’s Oscar-nominated, his West End run in A Streetcar Named Desire is sold out and he’s reportedly in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator follow-up. He’s known and loved for Normal People (on BBC iPlayer), but also in 2020 he starred in this Channel 5 drama, which went under the radar somewhat. Co-written by Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, it’s an addictive mystery revolving around a university lecturer (Peaky Blinders’ Emmett J Scanlan), his affair with his student (Emily Reid) and the sudden death of his wife (Catherine Walker) in a fire. Paul plays a firefighter who could also be some kind of saviour…

George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, 8 pm, Channel 4

Do you remember the static caravan George built in his first-ever series of Amazing Spaces? In tonight’s episode, he’s about to replace it, as the arts and crafts caravan which is his ‘10th anniversary build’ is finally finished. And, continuing on the anniversary theme, George meets someone from that first series to hear how his life has changed, while, elsewhere, he checks in on a project using the front half of a plane.

Best film on TV tonight

The Sisters Brothers, 11.15 pm, BBC Two

Jacques Audiard  rightly regarded as one of the finest directors working in cinema today, with movies such as A Prophet, Rust and Bone and The Beat That My Heart Skipped — delivers his first foray into English-language film with this excellent adaptation of Patrick DeWitt’s superb Western novel. It stars JohnC Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the titular siblings, hired assassins roaming the Old West in order to capture chemist Riz Ahmed, who is also being trailed by detective Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s thoroughly engaging and truly offbeat, helped by the sheer weight of a genuinely stellar cast and a sparkling script. This is not your usual Western — and it’s all the better for it.
