Best TV shows on TV tonight

Litvinenko, 9 pm, ITV1/ITVX (box set)

David Tennant as Alexander Litvinenko and Margarita Levieva as Marina Litvinenko

David Tennant won a National Television Award for his 2020 portrayal of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, and he turns in another tour de force performance as Alexander ‘Sasha’ Litvinenko, in a real-life crime drama first available on ITVX. The image of the former KGB agent lying in a hospital bed during his final days will live in infamy, and this four-part drama captures those dark memories skilfully while telling his extraordinary story. Tennant is excellent as Litvinenko, and there are plenty of other heroes to admire – and a terrifying villain who still looms large – in this brooding drama that seems as prescient as ever. Continues until Thursday.

The Wonders of the World I Can't See, 10 pm, Channel 4

This likeable travelogue follows blind comedian Chris McCausland as he visits four of the world’s most iconic locations with celebrity guests. First up, Harry Hill joins Chris in Athens, where they visit the famous Parthenon on the Acropolis. We also get to see the duo fishing, making pottery, performing Greek drama, olive-oil tasting and generally larking about. At the stunning Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympic Games, Harry even puts Chris through his paces in a few sporting disciplines in the searing heat! The pair make engaging travelling companions, with Harry regularly making Chris crease up with laughter, which is great fun to watch.

Best Interests, 9 pm, BBC One

Best Interests key art featuring Nicci (Sharon Horgan), Marnie (Niamh Moriarty) and Andrew (Michael Sheen) huddled together.

We presume writer Jack Thorne’s mantelpiece is already groaning under the weight of his many BAFTAs, but he might need to find space for some more accolades in the months to come. This week’s climactic double bill is a consummate study of a family and a marriage creaking in the face of pressure few can imagine and culminates in a court case that will decide the fate of 13-year-old Marnie. Her mother Nicci (Sharon Horgan) is determined to stop her life-support machine being switched off, and there are no villains in tomorrow’s finale (9pm, BBC1), which sweeps us away with its raw emotion.

Great British Railway Journeys, 6.30 pm, BBC Two

No sooner has Michael Portillo left the South Downs on Coastal Journeys than he’s back on his travels. This time, he heads up North and inland, marvelling at the networks of postwar Britain, a period of nationalisation under British Rail and one holding fond childhood memories for him. He begins in Preston, ironically the site of the first motorway, before terminating at Bury Bolton Street, with its beautifully preserved heritage station. In between, he has history lessons about the Beeching cuts and Blackburn Labour MP Barbara Castle by her one-time political adviser Jack Straw. Continues weekdays.

It’s four years since we last saw Charlie Brooker’s tech-based anthology series – and now it’s back for series six. There’s a great cast, with Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett starring in an episode called Beyond the Sea set in 1969 about two men on a hi-tech mission, while British stars John Hannah and Monica Dolan’s story sees them in a Scottish town with dark secrets. Other stars include Industry’s Myha’la Herrold, plus Paapa Essiedu, Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek Pinault.
