Best TV shows on TV tonight

Succession, 9 pm, Sky Atlantic/NOW

Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in an all-black outfit and hat in Succession season 4

Succession has won a host of Emmys and become a TV phenomenon since arriving on our screens in a hail of razor-sharp one-liners and obscene opulence back in 2018, but now the end is near. This year’s fourth and final season opens with Logan Roy’s children reeling after he cut them out of his billion-dollar media empire, with Shiv (Sarah Snook), who was betrayed by her own self-serving husband Tom (played wonderfully by Matthew Macfadyen), particularly livid. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and there are sure to be plenty more back-stabbings and boardroom battles as this wickedly funny psychodrama plays out.

There are plenty of hard-hitting cop dramas on TV these days, so it’s a relief to see this one from the makers of The Salisbury Poisonings approach the genre from a slightly different angle. Seen through the eyes of three rookie officers patrolling the volatile streets of Belfast, it’s a gripping look at the demands and pressure that come with such a beat. There’s no shortage of new and old Northern Irish talent on show, although Sherlock’s Sian Brooke delivers a compelling performance as Grace Ellis, an outsider who believes she can make a difference in a place with a unique history.
