Best TV shows on TV tonight

Magpie Murders, 9.15 pm, BBC One/iPlayer

Previously on BritBox, this intriguing whodunnit, adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his own novel, ingeniously interweaves the modern-day world of a crime novelist with the storyline of a new book featuring his 1950s detective Atticus Pünd. Lesley Manville plays a book editor who, after discovering the manuscript is missing the final chapter, learns its author has been found dead. As she investigates, parallels emerge between the fictional world of the Magpie Murders book, which comes to life in the series, and the real-life of its creator. Also featuring Daniel Mays in a double role, this classy production draws you in from the word go.

Casualty, 8.25 pm, BBC One

Kirsty Mitchell as Faith in her scrubs in Casualty

When it comes to shocking twists, Casualty isn’t sparing the horses. There was barely time to process Robyn’s death and David, Marty and Jacob’s sudden resignations, when it was revealed that ED stalwart Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) is secretly addicted to diazepam. Tonight, the origins of Faith’s addiction are explored in distressing flashbacks, triggered by the admittance of Angus (former Call the Midwife star Jack Ashton), a hook-up who stole from her while she slept last year. Adding to the nightmare, drug addict Kerrel begins blackmailing her into stealing medication from the pharmacy – or else! Will struggling Faith come clean before she’s exposed? Long game, well played.

Starstruck, 8.30 pm, ITV1

This series of the star-spangled sound-alike show has given us a host of top transformations, and we’ve now reached the penultimate show, looking for the last act to join ‘Meatloaf’, ‘Beyoncé’, ‘Sam Smith’, ‘Ed Sheeran’, ‘Frank Sinatra’ and ‘Adele’, already through to next week’s grand finale. Taking to the stage tonight are four more trios, emulating a queen of Country, a pop starlet, a disco dynamo and a soul legend. They are all powerhouse performers that present quite the conundrum for our judges, Adam Lambert, Beverley Knight, Shania Twain and Jason Manford, who must pick their favourite of the night before the voting audience choose who is to go through to the final.

Frank Sinatra Night, from 7.35 pm, BBC Two

If you can judge the affection for a famous person by the number of nicknames they have, it seems Frank Sinatra must have been held in the highest esteem. Next month marks 25 years since the death of the singer variously known as the Chairman of the Board, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Voice of the Century and the Sultan of Swoon, and tonight, BBC Two pays tribute, beginning with the 1967 TV special A Man & His Music + Ella + Jobim. That’s followed by At the Royal Festival Hall (8.25 pm), The Voice of the Century Arena Special (9.20 pm) and finally the film High Society (10.55 pm), in which he co-starred with Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly.
