Magpie Murders, 9:15pm, BBC One
As editor Susan (Lesley Manville) heads to author Alan Conway’s funeral, it provides a distraction from decisions about her future. She’s said she’ll think about moving to Crete with Andreas, and also about taking on the publishing company’s CEO job, but doesn’t seem keen on either.
The action switches effortlessly from Alan’s funeral in the present to Sir Magnus’ funeral in the 1950s – at the same church, and with many actors in dual roles. Meanwhile, Susan has come to the chilling realisation that the story in Magpie Murders mirrors that of her own family. Should she be looking in her past to discover ‘whodunnit’ in the incomplete manuscript?

Let’s get straight to it. We’re worried about the future of Jacob (Charles Venn) at Holby. Since joining the paramedic team, the former ED nurse hasn’t exactly been following procedure. Tonight, last week’s rule-breaking comes back to haunt him when Teddy and Sah are trapped in a deadly hostage situation with vulnerable shopkeeper Krish.
As the situation escalates, will another maverick move by the medic cost a colleague their life? If you like seeing Iain angry, this is the episode for you. And speaking of Iain, Faith’s love life gets the seal of approval from her children, and Jan discovers Gethin’s sad secret.

The Windsor Castle Fire: The Untold Story, 8:15 pm, Channel 4
On 20 November 1992, the world’s oldest inhabited castle caught fire, and over the next 12 hours up to 200 firefighters fought to bring the blaze under control. But how do you do that when pumping water into a building full of precious artwork is likely to cause almost as much damage as the fire itself?
Using newly discovered footage, this minute-by-minute reconstruction details the tactics used by the fire service and reveals astonishing acts of personal bravery. It also steps back to argue that the huge cost of the rebuild changed the way the Royal Family was funded.

Dad's Army: 50 Years of Laughs, 7:45 pm, Channel 5
Yes, it’s been on before, but that’s only fitting for a history-plus-gossip documentary on TV’s most durable (and surely most repeated) show. There are lots of clips, background on the cast and stories about who nearly didn’t take the gig – and who did, with some regrets. For real fans, the 1971 film is showing on Friday on Film4 in the ‘guilty pleasure’ afternoon slot (2.30pm).

Best box set on TV tonight
Obsession, Netflix
From the Regency romp Bridgerton to the saucy shenanigans of Sex Education, Netflix is developing a reputation for spicy television, and this four-part erotic thriller might be it's most lustful yet. The Stranger’s Richard Armitage and Happy Valley’s Charlie Murphy star in the intoxicating tale of top surgeon William Farrow, who becomes infatuated with his son’s fiancée, Anna (this adaptation of Josephine Hart’s novel Damage delves further into Anna’s story than the 1992 film starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche).
Filled with lies, deceit and plenty of bedroom antics, it’s a compelling look at the destructive power of forbidden desire.

Best film on TV tonight
Blueback, 6 pm, Sky Premiere
Tim Winton’s children’s novel is the inspiration for this family-friendly eco-warning drama. Abby and her mother Dora live in a beautiful bay in Western Australia, where they dive, search for abalone and befriend a blue groper fish they name Blueback.
But a developer’s plans to mine the natural resources spur them to get the area declared a nature reserve. Mia Wasikowska (as adult Abby), Radha Mitchell and Eric Bana are the big names in this gentle drama which has mesmerising underwater photography and a convincing animatronic fish.
