Best TV shows on TV tonight

Saturday Night Takeaway, 7 pm, ITV1

We do love a shiny-floor show and, to fill the void left by The Masked Singer on ITV1, is the sparkliest of them all as our favourite Geordie duo Ant and Dec are back with more fun, games and celebrity wind-ups in the ever-popular Saturday Night Takeaway. Actor David Tennant is live in the studio as Guest Announcer, Alison Hammond braces herself for a truly terrifying Undercover, and chart-topper Tom Grennan stars in a mind-blowing End of the Show Show. And with Stephen Mulhern back for a bonkers Ant vs Dec and lots of audience surprises, the happiest 90 minutes of your weekend starts here!

The Wheel, 7 pm, BBC One

Michael McIntyre hosts The Wheel

After a long absence of, ooh, let’s see, a whole week, Michael McIntyre is back on Saturday nights as a run of his Big Show is followed by The Wheel. Tonight’s celebrities on the family favourite include Charlotte Church, Kate Humble and The Great Pottery Throw Down’s Keith Brymer Jones. Let’s hope for Keith’s sake it’s not a particularly emotional episode…

Harry Wild, 8 pm, Channel 5

Harry Wild

Jane Seymour is clearly having a ball playing a free-spirited academic-turned-sleuth in this Dublin-set crime drama first shown on Acorn TV. Harriet ‘Harry’ Wild is a retiring English literature professor who loves smoking, drinking shots and swearing, especially in front of her strait-laced detective son Charlie (Kevin Ryan). When she spots links between a murder Charlie is investigating and an obscure Elizabethan play, she teams up with troubled teen Fergus (Rohan Nedd) to try to crack the case, and discovers a talent for sleuthing. Youthful-looking septuagenarian Jane is in fine form in a role that showcases her flair for comedy, while suggesting it can be great fun growing old disgracefully.

As they compete to form relationships, the most compatible couples will play matchmaker, breaking up other couples and sending them on dates with brand-new singles they’ll invite to the villa, so there's plenty of drama in store. Best film on TV tonight

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, 6.50 pm, Film4

Tom Hanks as the affable children’s TV host Fred Rogers.

You can see Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker in the Sky Cinema premiere of Elvis on Friday and here he plays another of his many roles based on real people, beloved American children’s entertainer Fred Rogers. Co-starring Matthew Rhys and Chris Cooper, it’s a feel-good movie that still has plenty of bite, and you’ll be left with a sense of pure joy that there are people in the world like Mr Rogers.
