A Royal Guide to… Fashion, 6.30pm, C4

What the royals wear is often more talked about than what they do or say so the pressure is on to make sure they always look their composed best. This episode looks back at how royal fashion has changed over the years and how The Queen has perfected her vibrant wardrobe, including the use of some very clever accessories to send secret messages. It also remembers how Princess Diana became a fashion icon, often using her clothes to say a lot more than she could with words. It also examines the dress code for male royals, especially the younger lot, and concludes it's becoming increasingly casual – sometimes even appearing in public with an open shirt and no tie – what would granny say!

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Under the Banner of Heaven, Disney Plus

TV tonight What happened to Brenda?

What happened to Brenda? (Image credit: Disney Plus)

Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Brenda Wright Lafferty, a 24-year-old woman found murdered in her Utah home in 1984, along with her infant daughter, Erica, in this true-crime drama. Devout Mormon detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) initially suspects Brenda’s husband Allen (The Serpent’s Billy Howle) of the crime, but suffers a crisis of faith when he learns that a fundamentalist religious sect may have played a part. With a carefully balanced portrayal of belief in many forms, and uniformly excellent performances, this gripping miniseries doesn’t shy away from the big questions about the power of faith.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Le Mans '66, 9pm, C4

TV tonight Christian Bale as racer Ken Miles.

A superb addition to the racing genre, this is the true story of how car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) partnered with take-no-prisoners British racer Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to challenge Ferrari for the 24-hour Le Mans race in 1966, with a car funded by Ford (cue some bureaucratic interference). Although the finale’s race is what everything builds towards, it’s the relationship between the two men that stays with you – both stubborn but driven (literally) by their great passion. And despite it being quite long (just over two-and-a-half hours), it’s expertly directed by James Mangold and beautifully filmed with more than enough heart and soul to see it past the finish line.

Live Sport

  • Commonwealth Games 2022, from 7am, BBC Two/One/Three/iPlayer/Red Button
  • FA Community Shield, Liverpool vs Manchester City, 4.15pm (k-o 5pm), ITV
