Best TV shows on TV tonight

Annika, 9.10 pm, BBC One/iPlayer (box set)

Annika (Nicola Walker)

DI Annika Strandhed’s habit of talking straight to the camera seems to have divided viewers. But without her Fleabag-like cheeky side-eye, how else would we immediately know that she fancies her daughter Morgan’s (Silvie Furneaux) therapist (Paul McGann) when she first clocks him? Along with the series’ quirky moments of humour, it’s another way of marking this out as different to the average crime drama and, as Annika, Nicola Walker embraces playing a real maverick cop as opposed to one who just frowns
a lot and drinks heavily. Tonight, Annika’s team investigate when a scientist at a water company is found dead in the loch which happens to be Glasgow’s main water source.

Ancient Egypt by Train with Alice Roberts, 9.10 pm, Channel 4/ Channel 4 (box set)

Egypt has one of the oldest train networks in the world, linking ancient wonders such as the Pyramids, the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Valley of the Kings. Now, anthropologist Professor Alice Roberts is riding that railway system to take a closer look. First, she journeys to Alexandria, where she tests the acoustics in an excavated Roman amphitheatre and meets a lawyer who claims she’s solved the mystery of where Queen Cleopatra is buried.

Casualty, 8.20 pm, BBC One

Iain Dean in Casualty

Cracks start to show in Iain and Faith’s picture-perfect romance tonight when Iain (Michael Stevenson) has the day from hell. He’s left emotionally drained by a multi-vehicle crash with haunting echoes of the collision that killed his ex, Sam, in 2018. Yet when the traumatised paramedic turns to Faith for comfort, he’s given the cold shoulder. Little does Iain know that their relationship is actually built on a foundation of drug addiction, secrets and lies. Even so, it’s dawning on him that something ain’t right. Hurt and confused, he tells Faith they need to talk, which for most people is code for breaking up!
