Best TV shows on TV tonight
Strictly Come Dancing 2022, 6.55 pm, BBC One
Now that we’re past the halfway stage of the competition, hopefully the remaining celebrities are feeling a little more confident of their dancing ability than in those first few weeks. And if, during one of their live routines on a Saturday night, they happen to spot Motsi and Shirley on their feet in appreciation, they’ll know they’ve won over half the judges. Just keep it ‘clean’ for Anton and, er, perfect for Craig and they’ve got a full house! This week, the pressure intensifies as the couples are competing for the chance to perform in next week’s show at Blackpool, the first time Strictly has been back in the iconic ballroom since 2019. ★★★★★ JP
Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, 9 pm, BBC One
Huw Edwards presents coverage of the annual Festival of Remembrance from London’s Royal Albert Hall, which will be attended by the King and the Queen Consort and other members of the Royal Family. Artists appearing tonight include Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo and daughter Virginia, Luke Evans and Hannah Waddingham, plus the Bach Choir, the Band of the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force Squadronaires. ★★★★ JP
Castle Howard: Through The Season, 8 pm, Channel 4

The stunning stately home, built in North Yorkshire in the 1700s, attracts approximately 250,00 visitors a year and has been used to film some of our most popular TV series including Victoria and Bridgerton. This fascinating series shows behind-the-scenes work needed to make it a success, what with 200 staff and spiralling post-pandemic costs. A publicity shoot with former Bake Off contestants, a special exhibition celebrating the castle’s cinematic heritage and a pesky peacock nicknamed Houdini feature in this opening episode. ★★★★ TL
Jools' 30th Birthday Bash, 9 pm, BBC Two
A special show marking 30 years of Later… with Jools Holland, recorded at London’s Hammersmith Apollo last month. Performers include Robert Plant, Michael Kiwanuka, First Aid Kit and Richard Hawley. That's followed by The A-Z of Later… (10.35pm), which has highlights of the show from over the years, including the TV debuts of both Amy Winehouse and Adele. ★★★★ JP
Best box set on TV tonight
The Queen and her family find themselves on the back foot as this lavish saga moves into the 1990s with a brand-new cast (including Imelda Staunton as the Queen) and plenty of royal drama. The breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage hogs all the headlines, with Dominic West capturing our new King wonderfully, but the first episode of this 10-part series also sees him toying with the idea of ousting his mother. The show’s writer, Peter Morgan, handles the story with subtlety and skill, yet even the pulled punches can’t remove the edge from a story that resonates deeply in light of recent events. ★★★★★ SMA
Best film on TV tonight
War Horse, 5.15 pm, BBC Two
A timely showing, before Remembrance Sunday, for Steven Spielberg’s 2011 adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s World War One novel. Jeremy Irvine – then a newcomer – stars as Albert, a young lad separated from his beloved horse, Joey, when the colt is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of war. Albert signs up in the hope of finding Joey again, but the horse is difficult to track down in the chaos of combat. An excellent cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston, with John Williams’ stirring Oscar-nominated score adding to the already hefty emotional pull. ★★★ JP
