Best TV shows on TV tonight

Queens for the Night, 8.30 pm, ITV

It’s hell on heels for six celebrities tonight as they accept the challenge of becoming drag queens! Coronation Street’s Simon Gregson, EastEnders’ Adam Woodyatt, rugby ace Joe Marler, singer George Shelley, fitness icon Mr Motivator and Love Island’s Chris Hughes are each paired with a professional drag-queen mentor to discover their inner drag diva before performing acts ranging from magic to stand-up comedy in a talent show like no other. All six throw themselves wholeheartedly into their roles, and there are some truly impressive transformations - some of these stars could definitely be queens for more than one night! ★★★★★ SP

Strictly Come Dancing 2022, 7 pm, BBC One

After the BBC centenary and Halloween shows, tonight the remaining celebrities can devote all their energy to what is after all the lifeblood of Strictly: the dancing. While special editions of the shows are always entertaining, the BBC TV themes week divided opinion among viewers (although surely everyone could appreciate the rare sight of Craig laughing at the beginning of Ellie and Johannes’ Casualty tango). Some of the best dances so far featured in the ‘no frills’ week four of the series, with Hamza and Jowita’s salsa, Fleur and Vito’s Argentine tango and Tyler and Dianne’s couple’s choice all scoring highly. Who’ll impress tonight? ★★★★ JP

The Hacienda: The Club That Shook Britain, 10.15 pm, BBC Two

Manchester’s music venue The Haçienda became famous during the 1980s and 90s for its pivotal role in the acid-house and rave scene. But the story of the influential nightclub, bankrolled in part by local band New Order, was to end in financial failure and acrimony. This fascinating documentary chronicles the venue’s rise and fall with contributions from members of New Order, club regulars including Noel Gallagher, and those who worked there. ★★★★ JE

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

SAS Rogue Heroes, BBC iPlayer

SAS Rogue Heroes is a bold new drama from Steven Knight. (Image credit: BBC/Kudos/Rory Mulvey)

After his searing gangster saga came to an end after six series, Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight started looking for a new project and has found a cracker in this wartime drama about the creation of the Hereford-based Special Air Service – SAS. Another tale packed with mavericks, rule-breakers and antiheroes, this six-parter follows three British soldiers who terrorised Hitler’s forces in the deserts of North Africa, with Alfie Allen, Connor Swindells and Jack O’Connell having a ball in the lead roles. The result is a rollicking tale that feels like a cross between Band of Brothers and Knight’s previous hit series, so buckle up! (Also airing Sundays at 9 pm on BBC One) ★★★★★ SMA

Best film on TV tonight

The Keeper, 11.45 pm, BBC One

This award-winning drama is a solid old-school biopic telling the story of Bert Trautmann, the Manchester City goalkeeper whose name has gone down in footballing history because he carried on playing in the 1956 FA Cup final even though he had a broken neck. In this German and UK co-production, David Kross (War Horse and The Reader) shines as Bert, who only a few years before had been a German prisoner of war, and who initially struggles to win over hostile fans in post-war Britain. ★★★★ JP

Live Sport

  • Premier League: Everton vs Leicester City, 5 pm (k-o 5.30 pm), Sky Sports Main Event
  • Gymnastics World Championships, 2.05 pm, BBC Two.
