Best TV shows on TV tonight

Malpractice, 9 pm, ITV1/ITVX (box set)

Lucinda’s (Niamh Algar) ongoing nightmare is escalating after last week’s shocks, and now she is taking major risks by trying to learn more about the trouble she has landed herself in. As if that isn’t enough, she’s also getting rattled by her boss Leo (James Purefoy), who appears to be distancing himself from her. Norma (Helen Behan) and George (Jordan Kouamé), the Medical Investigation Unit investigators, are also upping the ante in their bid to uncover the truth and, as they interrogate Lucinda again, they are keen to delve deeper into her past. Later, as the A&E team head to an awards ceremony, there’s more than a touch of awkwardness when Lucinda makes a speech that’s brilliant but not well-advised.

The Windsors Special, 9 pm, Channel 4

The Windsors has been sending up the Royal Family for a few years now, and it’s safe to say the writers have been making plans for this week’s special ever since the first series in 2016. A coronation during a cost-of-living crisis provides plenty of food for comedy, especially when Slough’s Holiday Lodge Express looks the most likely venue for a state occasion. Expect much riffing on Meghan and Harry, a new arrival in the face of Sophie Wessex and some close-to-the-bone jokes about Prince Andrew.

Charles R: The Marking of a Monarch, 8 pm, BBC One

King Charles tells his extraordinary life story in his own words through interviews, documentaries and newsreel footage in this 60-minute insight. Ever since he was born, Charles has been destined to become King. Every important moment of his life has been captured on camera, meaning there is a wealth of rarely seen archive documenting his schooling, his bachelor years and his time in the military. There are even some long-lost audio recordings that reveal what Charles really thinks about the role of the monarchy and the truth about his experiences as a fledgling working royal. Earlier, Songs of Praise (1.15pm, BBC1) also looks at the King’s journey to his coronation.

Great Expectations, 9 pm, BBC One/iPlayer (box set)

Vengeance is in the air as the melancholy Dickens adaptation draws to a close, and ex-convict Magwitch (Johnny Harris) is out to make amends for his past. While Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin) continues coming to terms with the revelation that he is her father, Magwitch also has an update on the man who jilted Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) at the altar… Elsewhere, Pip (Fionn Whitehead) and Jaggers (Ashley Thomas) get news that leads Pip to ponder his future, and evil Compeyson (Trystan Gravelle) is still on his tail. But as everyone gathers at Miss Havisham’s home, an epic showdown looks certain…

Best box set on TV tonight

The Diplomat, Netflix

The Diplomat.

The always-excellent Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, the newly appointed US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, who was hoping to be sent to Afghanistan rather than London. But as threats of war bubble over across the world, Kate has to make do with the UK, where she defuses international crises, forges strategic alliances, and adjusts to her new life and career.

Making everything harder is Kate’s need to balance the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state with surviving her long-term marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). The political thriller also stars Brits David Gyasi and Rory Kinnear, while Celia Imrie makes a guest appearance.

Best film on TV tonight

Moana, 3 pm (times vary), BBC One

Moana and Maui.

Disney again delivers a princess-themed animated musical that will delight adults as well as the younger audience. This time, the setting is Polynesia, where sparky leader-to-be Moana (voiced by Hawaiian Auli’i Cravalho) sets off on an oceanic quest to save her people with the help of reluctant demi-god Maui (a wonderful Dwayne Johnson). The songs are catchy – especially Jemaine Clement’s giant bedazzled hermit crab channelling David Bowie with Shiny – while the visuals are imaginative and the script sharp. Both Cravalho and Johnson are reprising their roles for the just announced live-action remake.
