Best TV shows on TV tonight
Grace, 8 pm, ITV1
The murky adaptation of Peter James’ crime novels makes a stirring return, as the third series begins with a case that opens a door to the past for DS Roy Grace (John Simm). The return of the ‘Brighton Prowler’, an evil predator who evaded the police a decade ago, is a source of personal regret for the detective, especially as the investigation was so badly handled back in 2012. Flashbacks to that time also offer important clues in the riddle of his wife Sandy’s disappearance. We just hope they don’t affect his budding romance with Cleo Morey (Zoe Tapper)! Elsewhere, Craig Parkinson has a memorable moment when DS Norman Potting delivers a bit of comeuppance in the final scene.

Rise and Fall, 9 pm, Channel 4
There will be power struggles, plotting and alliances formed when 16 contestants jostle to ‘rise to the top’ in a bid to win £100,000. From the creators of hit show The Traitors comes this new series which sees contestants divided into Rulers and Grafters. While the Rulers live in luxury in a London penthouse, the Grafters must live and work below in a windowless basement. The harder they work, the more money goes into the cash fund for a Ruler to win, but no one is safe and anyone can find themselves rising or being toppled. Continues tomorrow.

And what verdicts will the juries deliver?

The Great Celebrity Bake Off, 7.45 pm, Channel 4
The food mixers are working overtime as more celebrities limber up to dazzle Paul and Dame Prue with their baking to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer. First up, there’s a Friend in knead (sorry!) in the form of David Schwimmer, who is joined by comics Tom Davis and Rose Matafeo and Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson. For the Signature, they make mini pies, which Prue optimistically hopes will be ‘irresistible’! Then, after a tricky Technical, the Showstopper sees them create their ‘biggest celebrity fail’ from meringue – get ready to witness one of the most (intentionally!) revolting-looking bakes on record! Who will nab the Star Baker apron?
