Best TV shows on TV tonight

Endeavour, 8pm, ITV1

It’s all kicking off in Oxford. A rather nasty group of undergraduates, known as The Debonairs, are making their presence felt, while filming is under way on Jolly for Short, a long-running TV detective drama starring a popular actor (Kevin R McNally) – cue some lovely in-jokes! But when a uniformed cop is found dead, a homeless man is viciously killed and an artist disappears, Endeavour (Shaun Evans) and Fred (Roger Allam) have an unpleasant tangle to unravel.

However, Blenheim Vale is still occupying Endeavour’s thoughts, and he is keen to excavate the site, although he soon discovers that raking up the past might not be wise…

The death of cop John Fordham during a raid at the home of Kenneth Noye (Jack Lowden) has left devastated DCI Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville) and his team even more determined to bring everyone involved in the Brink’s-Mat robbery to justice. But although Noye is under arrest on suspicion of murdering Fordham, matters become complicated during an electrifyingly tense encounter with Boyce, and, later, at the equally fraught trial…

Meanwhile, the police are also keen to get answers from gold smelter John Palmer (Tom Cullen), but he’s in Tenerife, and, unsurprisingly, showing no sign of wanting to return home.

Catastrophe is about to strike in tonight’s fourth and final episode of Stephen’s fascinating exploration into the world of the prehistoric beasts, as a vast asteroid hurtles towards Earth. Thanks to hi-tech CGI, Stephen gets to witness how the dinosaurs were wiped from the planet in a devastating impact that had the force of 10 billion atomic bombs, triggering earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires and deadly gas clouds. But if the dinosaurs hadn’t become extinct 66 million years ago, would humans be alive today?
