Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Staircase, 9pm, Sky Atlantic/NOW

TV tonight The Peterson family gather together.

Viewers around the world were transfixed by the highly acclaimed documentary series The Staircase when it was released on Netflix in 2018. It explores the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Kathleen Peterson – did she simply fall down the stairs at home, or did her husband Michael kill her and make it look like an accident? This eight-part drama, inspired by the documentary and starring Toni Collette as Kathleen and Colin Firth as Michael, considers the many theories of what happened that night, as well as the impact on the couple’s family and even the original documentary crew themselves…

We Hunt Together, 9pm, Alibi

TV tonight Lola and Jackson’s new case is not isolated.

The first run of this gripping, gory and grimly funny crime thriller stood out from the pack by giving as much attention to brilliantly twisted killer Freddy (Hermione Corfield) as it did to engagingly mismatched cops DS Lola Franks (Eve Myles) and DI Jackson Mendy (Babou Ceesay). Now, as the second series begins, Lola and Jackson investigate a brutal murder committed by a figure dubbed ‘The Birdman’, who sports a seriously creepy pigeon mask. Shocking links emerge to Freddy, who evaded justice for her previous crimes… Colin Morgan and Tamzin Outhwaite join the cast.

Paul Merson: A Walk Through My Life, 8pm, BBC2

Paul Merson’s struggles with addiction have been well documented (Football, Gambling and Me on iPlayer is well worth a watch), but this gentle film finds the former footballer in a reflective mood and, thankfully, a much more positive place. With just a camera for company, he returns to Yorkshire, a place he knows well after a stint at Middlesbrough FC in the 1990s, to walk and talk in the stunning countryside. He speaks candidly about the dark days, but also reveals how family and faith have enabled him to find joy once more. A moving watch.

Secrets of the London Underground, 8pm, Yesterday

TV tonight Siddy and Tim take the Tube.

Yesterday’s hit series returns for a second trip, as railway historian Tim Dunn teams up with the London Transport Museum’s Siddy Holloway to explore the capital’s historic Tube network. En route, get a sneak peek at archives, unseen locations and rare artefacts. In this first episode of 10, we learn that the Jubilee line’s major change of destination, back in the 1990s, left an unused platform at one of the busiest stations, which is now hired by film companies for up to £4,000 an hour! Plus, why were the iconic wobbly ‘strap hangers’ replaced with carriage handrails? All will be revealed…

Secret Spenders: Beat the Price Rises, 8pm, C4

TV tonight Anita Rani hosts.

Anita Rani and her team of cost-cutting experts return with a timely series offering advice on how to cope with soaring energy bills and food prices. The first two households they visit are in absolute need of purse-string-tightening (and possible couples’ therapy). In London, covert filming reveals spending on designer clothes, while in Milton Keynes, the splurges on beauty treatments are no secret, but still need curbing.

The Pentaverate, Netflix

TV tonight Mike Myers takes on eight characters.

Austin Powers’ Mike Myers is rarely content with playing just one character, and in this quirky comedy, the chameleon-like star has a whale of a time tackling no less than eight different roles! Among them is veteran Canadian reporter Ken Scarborough, who is investigating a secret society known as The Pentaverate, which has been saving the world from disaster since the Middle Ages, but is suddenly under threat… He also portrays their oldest member, Lord Lordington. Look out, too, for Jennifer Saunders.
