Best TV shows on TV tonight
Ambulance, season 9, 9 pm, BBC One
As the weekend shift clocks on, the first job of the day for paramedics Hayley and Joe is a really tough one, only made bearable by the amazing support they give each other. "The hardest jobs," says Hayley, "are when they [the patient] are past the point of help. I see people so isolated, in such desperate situations, just doing the best they can." After a devastating start to the day, Hayley and Joe are then called to 100-year-old Doris, who turns out to be just the tonic they need. She’s had a fall, but still feels 21 and is full of laughter and stories. They help her up, pop the kettle on and she puts a smile back on their faces, reminding them that not every job ends in tragedy.

Huge Homes with Hugh Dennis, 9 pm, More4
An old military fortress on a craggy island is normally the kind of place you might expect to find a Bond villain. However, it’s just one of the enormous and unique houses Hugh visits in the first episode of this four-part property series. It took owner Mike six years and a builder with a helicopter to renovate this 19th-century artillery fort off the Pembrokeshire coast. There are plenty of other gems on show tonight, but our particular favourite is a converted water tower in Surrey that reaches 40m into the sky, with 142 steps separating six floors.

Bloods, season 2 (part 2), 10 pm, Sky Comedy/NOW
The paramedics of South Hill are back to dispense more laughs as Bloods returns with five new episodes. Wendy (Jane Horrocks) is anxious about the impending investigation that she and partner Maleek (Samson Kayo) face for possibly misdiagnosing a patient on New Year’s Eve. Maleek, on the other hand, just wants to forget about it, so he volunteers them for a matchday shift at Crystal Palace – but will the lure of the terraces prove too strong? Back at the depot, Lawrence (Julian Barratt) is worried that Jo (Lucy Punch) hasn’t shown up for work since their disastrous almost-kiss at New Year….

A Farm Through Time, 9 pm, Channel 5
Rob and Dave Nicholson continue to explore farming down the ages guided by historian Ruth Goodman, this time going back 2,000 years when a huge expansion in agricultural production was triggered by the Iron Age. The brothers experience life as Ancient Britons at Butser Farm, getting lessons in forging a sickle and using an ancient plough. Britain’s booming wool and wheat trade caught the attention of the Romans, which led to their invasion in AD43, so Ruth highlights the foods they introduced, and the presenters end the episode with a big feast.

Also starring Callum Turner as ex-soldier Shaun Emery and Ben Miles as Commander Danny Hart.
