Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Great British Bake Off 2022, 8 pm, Channel 4

It’s been a vintage Bake Off with great characters and gorgeous bakes, but now there are just three deserving finalists left to tackle some of the tent’s toughest-ever challenges. For the Signature, they must present a summer picnic involving an incredible 18 individual bakes — ‘Do it in the time and don’t make mistakes,’ says Paul helpfully to one baker! Then, after a supremely difficult Technical, the final Showstopper is a cake-based sculpture with the theme of ‘Our Beautiful Planet’.

Some of this series’ previous contestants come back for good measure, but, sadly, only one baker can nab the trophy, and we agree with Prue, who declares, ‘I don’t care who wins, I just love them all!’. ★★★★★ CC

MasterChef`: The Professionals 2022, 9 pm, BBC One

Another four chefs are preparing to subject themselves to the all-seeing gaze of the judges in the latest heat. In the dreaded Skills Test, two of them must endure Marcus Wareing’s tricky challenge of turning a rack of pork into chops with a butterbean stew in just 20 minutes, while the other two face Anna Haugh’s equally difficult feat of making delicious tempura vegetables with a Japanese-style chilli mayonnaise. Then, the pressure is on as they all cook a two-course Signature Menu for a place in the next quarter-final. Continues tomorrow and Thursday. ★★★★ CC

Louis Theroux interviews... Bear Grylls, 9 pm, BBC Two

Louis gets to enjoy his ‘James Bond moment’, arriving by boat to Bear’s private island off the Welsh Coast. The pair explore the island while Bear talks about his busy life as an adventurer, his meat-heavy diet and his social anxiety, which is surprising. Bear puts Louis through his paces, getting him to try out his daily workout with a super-heavy dumbbell.

Louis also accompanies Bear to visit a Scout troop in south London (Bear is Chief Scout) and a Marine reserve training camp, before joining him in Cornwall at Bear’s Gone Wild Festival, his annual adventure weekend for families. ★★★★★ NH

Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland and Beyond, 9.15 pm, Channel 4

This week, Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming visit the Isle of Skye, which has a special place in Miriam’s heart as it was where she and her partner Heather first went on holiday together more than 50 years ago. Alan has arranged a boat trip – ‘I bet you sometimes wish I was Joanna Lumley,’ says Miriam as he struggles to push her wheelchair onto the jetty while also carrying his dog Lala – which turns out to be magical as they’re soon surrounded by dolphins. (And if you’re wondering, Alan says he wouldn’t trade Miriam for Joanna for all the tea in China.) ★★★★ JP

Best box set on TV tonight

The Crown season 5, Netflix

Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown

The Crown is finally back for its fifth season. (Image credit: Keith Bernstein/Netflix)

The Queen and her family find themselves on the back foot as this lavish saga moves into the 1990s with a brand-new cast (including Imelda Staunton as the Queen) and plenty of royal drama. The breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage hogs all the headlines, with Dominic West capturing our new King wonderfully, but the first episode of this 10-part series also sees him toying with the idea of ousting his mother. The show’s writer, Peter Morgan, handles the story with subtlety and skill, yet even the pulled punches can’t remove the edge from a story that resonates deeply in light of recent events. ★★★★★ SMA

Best film on TV tonight

Charade, 12.10 pm, Talking Pictures TV

Cary Grant in Charade

A dazzlingly stylish, funny and suspenseful Hitchcock-style thriller boasting mesmerising chemistry between stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (watch out for her ad lib when she asks how he shaves with the dimple in his chin). She’s a widow being chased in Paris by a band of sinister crooks and he’s a mysterious stranger she doesn’t know if she can trust. Constantly exciting with its mix of wit and fast-paced action, it really is a gripping ride. Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn all add impact. ★★★★★ DW

Live Sport

  • Women's International Football: England v Norway, 6.15 pm (k-o 7pm), ITV 4
  • Match of the Day Live: The FA Cup, 7:30pm (Kick-off 7.45pm), BBC Three
