Best TV shows on TV tonight
The Gallows Pole, 9 pm, BBC Two/iPlayer (box set)
Shane Meadows is an inimitable director and his improvised style of dialogue gives this 18th-century tale a real grounding and a modern tinge, which is definitely an acquired taste. Despite the meandering plot, this working-class period drama remains an intriguing watch, and it’s difficult not to get caught up in the community’s struggle for happiness within an oppressive system. In tonight’s episode, David Hartley (Michael Socha) shares his plans for a coining conspiracy, and, despite the risks, all his pals are desperate to be involved, while he also rebuilds some bridges with his old flame Grace (Sophie McShera).

Extraordinary Escapes with Sandi Toksvig, 9 pm, Channel 4, Channel 4 (box set)
Walking encyclopaedia Sandi Toksvig is back for a third outing of her soothing series which sees her explore more remote getaways around the UK and Ireland. Once again, she’ll be joined by a different travel companion each week, and expect plenty of humour this time as they’re five fabulous queens of comedy. First up is Hollywood star and stand-up supremo Suzy Eddie Izzard, who joins Sandi in Ireland’s stunning County Clare. As well as splendid scenery and unusual holiday retreats to swoon over, the joy of this series is often the candid conversations that Sandi elicits from her chums, as is definitely the case in tonight’s opening episode. ★★★★★ TL

The White Lotus meets Gone Girl in this eight-part thriller based on Alexis Schaitkin’s 2020 novel about a teenage tourist who goes missing while on a family holiday on an idyllic Caribbean island. Told through multiple timelines, the story follows the affluent Thomas family’s stay at the luxurious Indigo Bay Resort, where eldest daughter Alison (West Duchovny, the daughter of David Duchovny and Téa Leoni) disappears and later turns up dead.
Meanwhile, in present-day Brooklyn, Alison’s younger sister Emily (Alycia Debnam-Carey) discovers one of the men thought to be involved, Clive (Josh Bonzie), is living nearby. Can she infiltrate his life and uncover the truth?

The Repair Shop, 8 pm, BBC One
Fresh from their deserved win at last month’s BAFTA TV Awards, Jay Blades and his merry team of crafters are back for a month of summer restorations. Organ expert David Burville kicks off tonight, welcoming Poet Laureate Simon Armitage to the barn, along with a rather sorry-sounding harmonium. Other treasures crying out for some TLC include a pair of child’s clogs, a Czech sculpture and a silver charm bracelet. Look out for two forthcoming specials marking the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in the UK and the birth of the NHS.

Best box set on TV tonight
Poker Face, Sky Max/NOW (box set)
Rian Johnson’s anthology series has a pleasing retro feel about it from the titles onwards. Imagine, if you can, Mr Benn in the hands of Quentin Tarantino, as drifting ‘Poker Face’ Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) sets out to solve a different mystery in each episode.

Best film on TV tonight
Avatar: The Way of Water, Disney Plus
If you missed this hit sequel at the cinema last year, it’s now available to stream. Head back to Pandora more than a decade after the events of the original movie. Jake and Neytiri have started a family and are living peacefully, but when the humans and an old enemy return, they are forced to go on the run and seek help from a clan of Na’vi that make their lives by the ocean. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver all return from Avatar (though not all in the same roles), along with new additions to the cast, Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis.

Some of his favorite shows are What We Do In The Shadows, Bridgerton, Gangs of London, The Witcher, Doctor Who, and Ghosts. When he’s not watching TV or at the movies, Martin’s probably still in front of a screen playing the latest video games, reading, or watching the NFL.
