Best TV shows on TV tonight

Doc Martin, season 10, 9 pm, ITV

The last ever series begins.

In tonight’s opening episode of the last-ever (sob!) series, the doc’s resignation as Portwenn’s GP still stands. He’s now a stay-at-home dad to son James Henry and baby daughter Mary Elizabeth and whiles away the hours fixing clocks, reading medical journals and rearranging the cutlery drawer… Yet natural order will be restored! Doc devotee Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) launches a campaign to get him reinstated. But it’s the appearance of poorly Abigail (Fay Ripley) that forces his return to medicine. We won’t spoil it, but before the credits roll, everything clicks back into place with a satisfying snap. A triumphant return.

The doyenne of cooking is back with a tempting new series looking at the perfect dishes for sharing with a crowd. First up, Dame Mary attends a gorgeous Indian wedding, where she helps out with the food and even serves the lucky bride and groom her own delicious chocolate shots! She also reveals how to make a host of other celebratory sharing dishes including avocado, beetroot and prawn stack, roasting-tin chicken and, best of all, a rich chocolate truffle dessert. But the loveliest moment comes when she reflects on her own nuptials to husband Paul Hunnings and the fruit cake she – naturally – made herself!

Shetland, season 7, 9 pm, BBC One

What has Martin caught on camera?

We knew that an actor of Patrick Robinson’s calibre wouldn’t be cast just to hold some paintbrushes and dispense the occasional bit of homespun wisdom, so it was inevitable that his character, artist Lloyd, would fall under suspicion sooner or later. Things aren’t looking good for him, as Perez delves into the past that Lloyd’s tried so hard to keep hidden – would he really kill to protect his secret? Meanwhile, Abbie’s covert investigation yields results when she proves that wildlife photographer Martin (Ladi Emeruwa) has been snapping more than just birds – and his shocking confession turns the investigation on its head…

Since then, medal-winner Greg has taken the torch to schools to inspire the next generation and now it needs help to shine brightly again. Also, the restoration of a jukebox allows its owners Rachel and Jess to remember happier days. Finally, metal expert Dom Chinea holds the hopes of a whole village in his hands as he repairs a giant sign that used to be at the heart of their community.

If you love treats but are too busy to faff around making them, then Nadiya Hussain has all the tips you need to turn baking into a pleasure. Her first challenge is afternoon tea, and she shares recipes for a dalgona coffee cake, meringue lollipops, butterscotch cheesecake bars and an afternoon-tea pudding. Putting Nadiya’s own twists on classics, this series will showcase everything from easy breakfasts to delicious roasts. She’s also joined by guests such as allergy-conscious baker Mina Said-Allsopp.

Gillian Anderson guest stars as Catherine’s mother.

Everything seems to be falling apart for Catherine, and she’s losing faith in both Russia and her own ability to lead it. Surely this would be the perfect time for a little maternal pep talk? In theory, yes, but when Catherine’s mother Joanna (Gillian Anderson) comes to visit, her reports of Catherine’s siblings’ successful marriages and her disapproval of Catherine’s coup leave the Empress even more deflated. Perhaps she might find something to lift her spirits in the science contest she is holding for new inventions?

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Thoroughbreds, 11.15 pm, Film4

Part black comedy, part suspense thriller, this studiedly cool noir stars Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy as posh Connecticut teens who hatch a murder plot. The duo are chillingly amoral, verging on the sociopathic, but they keep us engaged as their scheme gathers momentum. In his final film role, Anton Yelchin plays the small-time drug dealer who is roped in to help to carry things out.
