What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Sunday 24th June
Poldark, 9pm, BBC1
After his imprisonment in France and slow recovery from post traumatic stress disorder, it appeared doctor Dwight’s life was finally on the up when he and Caroline announced they were expecting a baby last week. Tonight’s episode sees Caroline going into labour and Dwight safely delivering their daughter, Sarah. However, the Enyses’ marriage is rocked again when Dwight spots something wrong with the baby… Meanwhile, Ossie’s formidable mother Lady Whitworth (Rebecca Front) turns up to torment poor Morwenna (as if she hasn’t suffered enough) and George refuses to give up his seat in Parliament to Ross without a fight… Another gripping episode. Rating: ****
World Cup, 12.10pm, BBC1
Here’s an England game (k-o 1pm) that should be a comparative breeze – except that we all know there’s no such thing although they did win the first game! Panama have been battered by the likes of Switzerland in friendlies before the tournament, so Harry Kane et al should hopefully do the business today in preparation for Thursday when England take on Belgium. Also on: Japan v Senegal (BBC1, k-o 4pm) Poland v Colombia (ITV, k-o 7pm). Rating: ***
The Handmaid’s Tale, 9pm, C4
We can’t work out what to make of Serena (Yvonne Strahovski). Is she a victim of the society she dreamt up, or the worst perpetrator of all? After the shock of Offred’s pregnancy scare, the doctors advise that there should be an end to the hostility between the two women – Serena and Offred have to be kind to each other for the sake of the unborn baby. Seeing the effort Serena makes, and the chinks in her armour, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) takes a huge risk by trying to bring up the subject of Offred’s missing daughter, Hannah. How will Serena respond? Meanwhile, Nick’s new wife, Eden, tells Offred she’s worried he might be a gender traitor (gay) – is she going to stir up trouble? And the Commander has a project… Rating: ****
