Writer, Jed Mercurio, drops a major hint about the future of the hit BBC series...
Bodyguard has smashed all expectations in becoming one of the most talked about TV programmes of 2018 so far.
And now the show's writer and mastermind, Jed Mercurio, has suggested that the drama - which follows the journey of Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) and her protection officer David Budd (Richard Madden) - might not be over when the series draws to a close later this month.
Jed - who also wrote the hugely popular Line Of Duty - said: "I have got some ideas for a second series, but it is worth waiting until the run is finished to see which bits worked and which bits didn't work for the audience."
He also suggested that while viewers already have several theories about how the drama will inevitably conclude, all may not be as it seems.
"I have put in some red herrings, you have to be able to have a number of possible answers in play and that is all about what you let the audience in on and what you keep from them," explained Jed.
The political thriller attracted a huge consolidated audience figure of 10.4 million during the first episode, making it the highest figure for any new drama across all UK channels since 2006.
The BBC also confirmed it would be re-arranging the TV schedules to allow the series finale to be extended by 15 minutes in order to ensure the nail-biting episode is as sensational as it possibly can be.
Which, according to a TV insider, is almost unheard of.
“Giving an episode of any drama series more than a 60-minute slot is a rare event on the BBC, so this proves just how much they value Bodyguard," the source said.
Despite receiving heaps of praise for his "brilliant" writing, Jed puts the huge success of the show down to the two stars - Richard and Keeley.
“The success of Bodyguard is a tribute to the magnetism of our two leads, Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes," he confessed.
The thriller continues this Sunday on BBC1 at 9pm.
