Goodnight Sweetheart It may have been 17 years since Nicholas Lyndhurst last played time traveler Gary Sparrow, but he proved the show was still fresh and funny when he returned for a one-off special. Still Open All Hours The Roy Clarke sitcom has proved enduringly popular, with Sir David Jason now starring as an elderly Granville who’s turned just as penny-pinching as dear old Arkwright (Ronnie Barker in the original). Upstart Crow Shakespeare’s comedies may have been short on laughs, but this sitcom, written by Ben Elton, wasn’t, as David Mitchell starred as the legendary playwright. The first rate comedy included Liza Tarbuck as Will’s wife Anne Hathaway and Harry Enfield as Will’s father John Shakespeare.
Would I Lie to You? The panel comedy show may be 10 years old next year, but it’s lost none of its freshness. Captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack continue to fib away merrily under the watchful eye of Rob Brydon. Guests this series have included boxer David Haye and Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain.
Birds of a Feather The classic BBC-turned-ITV sitcom has retained its popularity as viewers enjoy the exploits of Sharon (Pauline Quirke), Dorien (Lesley Joseph) and Tracey (Linda Robson). David is the What To Watch Editor and has over 20 years of experience in television journalism. He is currently writing about the latest television and film news for What To Watch.
Before working for What To Watch, David spent many years working for TV Times magazine, interviewing some of television's most famous stars including Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland, singer Lionel Richie and wildlife legend Sir David Attenborough.
David started out as a writer for TV Times before becoming the title's deputy features editor and then features editor. During his time on TV Times, David also helped run the annual TV Times Awards. David is a huge Death in Paradise fan, although he's still failed to solve a case before the show's detective! He also loves James Bond and controversially thinks that Timothy Dalton was an excellent 007.
Other than watching and writing about telly, David loves playing cricket, going to the cinema, trying to improve his tennis and chasing about after his kids!
