Young Sherlock, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, is heading to Prime Video in the latest take on the classic stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Guy Ritchie, fresh from his success with The Gentlemen, is directing and executive producing the highly anticipated eight-part series. The drama is inspired by the Young Sherlock Holmes book series penned by British writer Andy Lane.

"In Young Sherlock we're going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they've never imagined before," said Guy Ritchie. "We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love."

Ritchie previously directed two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Here's everything we know…

Young Sherlock release date

Young Sherlock is likely to have a 2025 release date on Prime Video although this is still to be confirmed. We're basing this on the fact filming is now due to start in Cardiff, Wales.

Young Sherlock cast

Hero Fiennes Tiffin is playing Sherlock Holmes, who's aged 19. Tiffin also starred in the Guy Ritchie movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He's also set to appear alongside Idris Elba in the upcoming space survival thriller Above the Below

Starring across from Tiffin is Zine Tseng, playing a Chinese princess who's studing at Oxford and becomes embroiled with the case alongside Sherlock. Tseng will be familiar from 3 Body Problem where she plays a young Ye Wenjie.

Joseph Fiennes, who's the real-life uncle of Tiffin, plays Sherlock's father Silas. Natascha McElhone has been cast as Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia Holmes.

Young Sherlock plot

The makers tease: "At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever."

Is Watson in Young Sherlock?

This hasn't been revealed yet however, if they're sticking to the timeline in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories then no he won't appear, or at least not at first. Sherlock is 19 in this version and in the books he meets Watson in his 20s. There's actually a plaque in London at St Bartholomew's Hospital marking the spot of the pair's first meeting which was described in "A Study in Scarlet".

How many books are there in the Young Sherlock series?

There are eight books in the Young Sherlock Holmes book series. The first, "Death Cloud," was published in 2010 and the latest, "Night Break", was published in 2015. In the books Sherlock is younger, aged 14 in the opening story.

Is there a trailer?

No, not yet.
